History of my yard.
Around the turn of the century, I drove from South Carolina to south Georgia and traded a boat for four hog dogs. I had no idea that I was entering a life long relationship with a breed with whose existance I was hardly aware of. The old timer I delt with told me that "Nemo," one of the dogs I was getting, was half "Old Southern White" and half " White English". Nemo caught sixty wild boar in six months. He was built like a cougar on steroids and was 200% pure prey drive. I took him to my first bulldog show and had him registered as my foundation dog "Stevenson's Captain Nemo". Nemo's only short coming was that he had not been raised as a pet and was an all-buisness alpha male and not very people friendly. Having had a Great Dane that was a great pet and awesome hog catcher, I knew that a good working dog could also be a good pet. I quickly began a search for a similar bred pup that I could raise myself. After attending a couple of American Bulldog shows, I realized Nemo was different from most of what I saw being shown, with the exception being Alan Scott's American Bulldog "Crusher", who Scott called an "Old Southern White." In search of old blood like Crusher's and Nemo's, which I discovered was the foundation of the American Bulldog lines. The more I learned about the early blood, the more I decided that was what I wanted. I met others who like me preferred this and wanted to preserve this early stock. I aquired an unregistered adult White English female "Baby Doll I," and bred her to Nemo, then went and bred him to another OSW down in Georgia, then bought a second female, I NKC registered as my foundation Old Time Southern Bulldog "Queen O Sheba", the mother of what was to become my "Queen" line." The NKC had informed me that registered "American Bulldogs" and "Old Time Southern Bulldogs" could be bred and still be considered purebreds, being that the "Old Southern" blood was the original material that American Bulldogs were fashioned from. I leaned towards the "Old Time Southern Bulldog" name because I felt it was a truer description of what I was breeding. Ironically folks with American Bulldogs were coming back to me to buy my dogs to recover the characteristics that the early blood American Bulldogs were known for. Another irony is that the NKC has changed it's rules in what it accepts as American Bulldogs a number of times in the years that I have been breeding them. I'm told that at the present time the offspring of an OTSB bred with an AB has to be registered OTSB.
I struck gold when I met James & Laura Stout. They had been working and breeding these early blood, bulldog, hog dogs along side Jay Dorsey for years and all right here in SC near my home. These were the founders of the "Old Time Southern Bulldogs" breed. I bred Sheba to a couple of Stout's dogs and bought a pup from him. This pup "Stevenson's Jet Rountree" turned out awesome, better than I could have hoped for. He was a Stout/Dorsey mix,with heavy "Stout's Boss Hog" blood. Jet caught three wild boar the first time I took him out. Born August 11, 2007, He is now 85 lbs., 22 in. at the shoulder with a 2 ft. head. He is my mainstay, a friendly pet, hard core hog dog with every bit the prey drive of Nemo, and an excellent stud dog. I've bred and linebred him number of times with the goal of reproducing him. Jets' first breeding was to Baby Doll I. From this breeding I saved my favorite female and registered her "Baby Doll II" as another of my foundation "Old Time Southern Bulldogs." She became the mother of my "Baby Doll Line". I later brought my two female lines, "Queen line" & "Babydoll line", together in the "Firehouse's' " litter and also the "Cajun Queen", aka "Caja", litter. Jet has been super healthy, prolific, athletic, strong, non-dog agressive but with high prey drive and at 9 years old is still going strong. His offspring are now catching hogs from Mexico to Australia.
One of Jets' pups, "Big Bossman" puts it all on the line every day for the "South-East Wildlife Controll", catchin Hogs, treeing coons or catching an unruly bull. A Texas hog hunter reported that he had bred the dog I sold him, raised a litter of pups, sold them to other hog hunters all over the state and at 4 months old, every one of them was catching hogs. WOW! That is what I like to hear!
I have been incredibly fortunate to own "Jet Rountree "and I have linebred him repeatedly because he embodies what I desire in conformation, temperament, prey drive and intelligence. These are things a dog is born with !.., so again, I can not thank James and Laura Stout enough for producing him. I credit Jet's make-up to their discrete line breeding of "Stout's Bosshog of Dorsey". He is Jet's grandpa, great-grandpa on the sires' side, and his great-great-grandpa twice on his dam's side, makiing him 53% Bosshog. And if you count "Ladybird II's" blood, which I do because she is Bosshog's sister and an awesome dog in her own right., he is 56% BH/LBII blood. Now I've been line-breeding Jet to the point that I am having to bring in new blood. Realizing that Bosshogs' blood is not only a foundation block for many breeding programs around the world, but highly prized by many to preserve the look and traits that he and Jet possess, I have been searching out others who have carefully linebred the BH/LBII lines for my "outside" new blood, or for new OSW or WE blood to incorporate. My OTSB's, although they make good family pets and protection dogs, are basically OSW's, which in my case are standard type, early blood, American Bulldogs, very heavily outcrossed to White Eglish and used mainly for hog hunting. My goal is to produce fine dogs in their own right, but with an awesome heritage including the tried and true BH/LBII bloodlines.
